What is Graduate Record Examination (GRE) ?

This a US based test, which, in majority of the US colleges, is a requirement, when you apply for post-graduate courses. Some colleges outside US also have this as an application requirement.

How to take GRE ?

There are two ways: one is Computer-based and the other is Paper-based. The Computer-based test is available throughout the year. The Paper-based test is given 3 times in a year, and in places where Computer-based test is not available.

How long is the duration of GRE?

The test is for 3 hours and 45 minutes for Computer-based test.

What is the format of the Computer-Based GRE test?

GRE test has 3 sections. One is Verbal Reasoning section (with two 20 questions sections, and each section is for 30 minutes); the second is Quantitative Reasoning section (with two 20 questions sections, and each section is for 35 minutes); and the third is Analytical Writing section, which has two written responses, one called “Analyze an Issue” question, and the other “Analyze an Argument” question(with 30 minutes for each question). The order of the sections in the actual test would be Analytical Writing first followed by Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning in any order. One experimental section may appear on the test, and this will not count towards your scores, and you will not know which is experimental, so you should give equal attention to all the sections.

How do you get your Scores?

The score ranges from 130-170 (one point increments), for Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning sections. The Analytical Writing section is scored on 6 points (half-point increments).

How long the test score is valid?

The test score you receive is valid for 5 years.

How many times I can take the test ?

You can take the test 5 times in a year, and 21 days should lapse between any two attempts.

What books you would recommend for GRE preparation?

From our coaching experience, we would recommend you to page through ETS Official GRE Guide to familiarize with the format of the test.

The best verbal preparation material is always from the ETS. The book that is indispensable for verbal preparation is Old Pattern GRE Big Book, which is comprehensive, rigorous and questions are similar to the actual GRE test.

For GRE Math section we would recommend Manhattan 5 Lb. However for GRE verbal section we suggest not using any book other than the ETS based materials.

Where to get reliable practice materials for GRE?

The GRE test maker ETS provides two free Powerprep practice tests for free when you register for the test and three official tests are sold by ETS for extra preparation needs.
